Ragdolls are very easy to care for as far as grooming is concerned especially if you start with a grooming regime when they are kittens.  Grooming helps with bonding and can be enjoyed by both you and the kitten.

I would recommend that as soon as you get your Raggie you start grooming immediately.  It only needs a few minutes each day and helps your kitten to get used to being handled that can be a great benefit if you decide to show your cat.

Making a game of regular grooming will help them look forward to their time with you and the brush when they get older.

Once a fortnight sprinkle a little baby powder on their fur and gently rub in the powder.  When they are kittens use a soft brush and as they get older continue regular grooming with a regular brush.

When you are brushing their coats do remember the under belly, their pants and under their arms as this is where little knots will appear over night.  I use a couple of different brushes.  One called a slicker and the other is a double sided brush, soft on one side and hard on the other.  I never use a comb on my cats as their coats do not need it and I feel it strips the coat.

Grooming Tips

Brush up the fur first remembering the under belly to remove all the dead hair.  Continue for 5 minutes (don't forget the ruff and their head).

Sprinkle baby powder over their coat  taking care not to get the powder in their eyes.

Rub the powder into their coat with your hands and leave the coat to settle on its own.  DO NOT BRUSH DOWN.

With a bowl of warm water and cotton make-up pads, wash around the cats face to make sure no powder or loose hairs are in the cats eyes.

In 9 years of showing Ragdolls, I have never had to bath one of my cats.  Howevee some of the Ragdoll coats do have different textures so some may well need a bath.  If you do have to do this if you are going to show your cat, I would recommend not bathing your cat the night before a show.  Bath the cat at least 3 days before a show always making sure you rinse the coat well.  Keep the cat in for the next 24 hours.

Note for Bi Colours.  Please do not forget the cats feet.  They must be white and the pads must be nice and pink.

When I show my seal bi colour I only wash his feet the night before a show.  A good tip is to use white chalk powder rubbed into the feet but please make sure that there is NO trace of the powder on show day.  I use a small hard nail brush to make sure all the powder is out.

A Ragdoll is very easy to keep well groomed.  Grooming is a time to spend together so enjoy.
